Our UAH team is developing a finite element model of a magnetic gear in the electromagnetic simulation environment Ansys. This magnetic gear transforms a high speed input rotation and low torque into a low speed and high torque that is directly transmitted to the engine shaft.
The principal objective of the preliminary design is to maximize the output torque, mass torque density and volumetric torque density while keeping a high performance.
Later on, other configuration variables will be considered, results of the interaction with other system components as the stress suffered by the bearings and their configuration inside the motor.
